Did you know that a barn can tell you a lot about history just from a glance? PAPA artists were challenged this month to paint a barn. That might sound like a somewhat mundane task until you see the variety of barns they created. There are barns for cattle, barns to store tobacco, horse barns and round barns. There are barns that have lost their accompanying houses and barns in various stages of disuse and deterioration. Barn roofs have been used over the years as billboards to advertise, as in “See Rock City.” You can also follow trails to admire Barn Quilts.

You can sense the age of this “Summer Barn,” painted by Rebekah Thuline, by the faded red paint. It still seems to be in use as the doors are still on the hinges and the roof is still intact. It’s surrounded by a dense growth of yellow so tall that the barn appears to sink into the earth. You might even look twice to see if that’s actually the case. However, the bright blue sky filled with puffy white clouds and the bright green fields beyond leave you with a feeling that all is well within this bucolic scene. Come in this month to see our unique challenge exhibit of barns and other paintings that can capture your imagination. We love to simply enjoy art with you!
