As Americans are celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country’s birth in a myriad of ways, PAPA members are naturally using imagery! Artist Diane Bay’s answer to our challenge for July is a painting evocative of our collective roots. Through her vision we’re reminded of the way ordinary people lived during the time of the American Revolution. The woman’s sturdy house and well tended garden are indicators of the love and hard work required simply to live well. Her red, white and blue clothing add the patriotic note we might otherwise miss. You might imagine she has a husband and/or sons working in the field or perhaps off to war; sacrificing for the freedom their descendants will enjoy.
In our “Celebrating USA 250” challenge exhibit you’ll enjoy a wide variety of patriotic images. You’ll find Americana reflected in rodeos, parades and fireworks. You’ll also discover images evoking love of community and country in more subtle ways. We invite you to drop by the PAPA Gallery in downtown Paducah to enjoy art with us!
