Somehow the gaze of this young woman seems both nonchalant and penetrating at the same time. This evocative vignette titled Checkers by John McLaren, was voted our current People’s Choice painting. Central to the scene is the young woman in a summer dress and heels. It appears she’s finished whatever she ordered and now with crossed legs and chin in hand, might be deciding what to do next. In the background sits a man dressed in a suit and tie with what appears to be a smoking cigarette in hand. We wonder if he’s watching her or simply lost in thought. Most everything in the scene seems to suggest an earlier decade.
