Can you guess what this person is doing? Our featured artist this month consistently creates intriguing characters that tend to stay with you. Carol Hudson’s painting titled, “I’m Listening” is one such portrait. Your attention may initially be drawn to the bright red hair and perhaps the full rosy lips. You notice the slightly off kilter posture which takes you to the hand cupped at the ear. Then you realize as the title indicates, they’re listening. We don’t know what has captured such focus but once we notice the eyes, they are what tends to keep our attention. We want to see what is so interesting and almost wonder if we’re very quiet, we might hear. The subtle colors of the background combined with the quietly radiant cheeks soften and add interest to a vignette that might otherwise feel ordinary. In Carol’s experienced hands, it all balances beautifully and we have everything we need for a little mystery.
Carol’s special featured exhibit is full of these intriguing vignettes. You can find other of her paintings hanging throughout the gallery alongside other wonderful works in our fall show. We hope you’ll come by the PAPA Gallery in downtown Paducah to see all we have to offer. Whenever you find time for a visit, we simply love to enjoy art with you!
