Sometimes powerful images are created from simple variations in value as in this painting by PAPA artist Liz Hudson. Our latest artist challenge was “Eggs” and Liz painted them with dramatic effect in this still life with pears. In “Black and White” you can see the reflection of the egg in the foreground indicating a shiny surface. The eggs in the back seem to be nestled comfortably on a dark cloth. The plate and bowl are not merely blocks of white, but reveal variations generated by shadow and reflection from the light source. She reminds us that beauty is often found in simplicity.
Liz’s choice for this challenge is classic and our artists have created other eggs that are full of beauty, humor and the unexpected! Come by the PAPA Gallery in downtown Paducah and see them for yourself. We invite you to drop in anytime and simply enjoy art with us!
