What do you think of when you hear the term “abstract”? The challenge for PAPA artists this month was to paint in abstract. By definition, abstract painting doesn’t aim to create an accurate depiction of reality, but instead uses visual elements like color, form, shape and line to communicate ideas, evoke emotions, or explore artistic concepts independently of the real world. Jean Lorrah met the task with her vision of an “Abstract Cat.” She gave us a recognizable cat figure but provided some gentle cues to study a little closer. Are there 2 cats or is it simply the same feline looking in more than one direction? The straight lines segmenting its coat provide a pattern that might indicate calico or maybe just the way the light is shining. As with any artistic rendering, it’s left up to the viewer to determine.
Our special Challenge Exhibit wall is full of intriguing paintings in abstract we think you’ll enjoy. If you are downtown Paducah this weekend for the Zombie Crawl or just to enjoy the nice fall weather, wander on in to the PAPA Gallery and see what our artists have to offer. We simply love to enjoy art with you!
