Erin Gericke is an artist who has always loved to create.
Born and raised in Paducah, KY, she is always been deeply in love with her hometown. She graduated from high school in 2017 and will be pursuing a BA in Art and minor in Fine Art Entrepreneurship at Southeast Missouri State University in the fall. All throughout her life, she has been involved in art classes with local artists in addition to dual enrollment classes at the Paducah School of Art and Design. Even from a young age, she wanted to learn everything there was to know about art and always strove to challenge herself in trying new techniques and ideas.

Her work has been exhibited in many Paducah galleries such as the Yeiser Art Center, Clemens Gallery, The PAPA Gallery, in addition to larger venues in the surrounding region and in Louisville, Kentucky and Washington D.C. She has also painted two window murals on Broadway in Paducah, inspired by the city’s nickname, “Quilt City, U.S.A.” While creating work in charcoal and pastel in the past, her present body of work deals with the concept of home, featuring simplified paintings of the historic buildings of downtown Paducah, Kentucky created in ink and watercolor.

The Catapult Creative House Student Studios’ Artist of the Month series continues its 2018-2019 season with “Built Up: An Individual’s Examination of Home” featuring the work of Southeast Missouri State University art major Erin Gericke.

An exhibition reception, celebrating the work of Gericke, a junior from West Paducah, Kentucky, is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Oct. 5 as part of Cape Girardeau’s First Friday downtown arts events. The watercolors exhibition is currently on display with the closing reception scheduled for Oct. 5 on the second floor of Catapult Creative House, 612 Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The ubiquitous-and yet evermore temporal-concrete and steel structures that surround society, and represent contemporary cityscapes, are an integral component of peoples’ lives. From the intimate single roomed domicile to the megalopolis, cities are the sum of their parts, most importantly the inhabitants. In “Built Up: An Individual’s Examination of Home,” Gericke explores the nature of peoples’ relationship to the more expansive notion of home; and in the current anthropocentric environment where people routinely find themselves houseless, Gericke stresses the affect architectural surroundings have on decisions, memories and ultimately peoples’ lives.
